Are you tired of having you windows replaced every now and then? With good maintenance, any windows can last longer than it should be. Find out on how you can keep your windows longer.

Having an expert by your side will give you a sense of relief. Hire a professional window installation expert to inspect your windows. The expert can perform a reliable assessment and will let you understand the problem. He/She would be able to pinpoint the areas need to be maintained and at the same time give you some advice on how to properly maintain your windows.

Proper Cleaning

At least once every six months, cleaning your windows is highly recommended for a safer environment. Improper cleaning can cause some permanent damage to the window like scratches on the pane. As much as possible, use cleaning materials which are free of grit and debris. In choosing cleaning solutions or detergents, use only those which specifically state safe for glass cleaning.

Sealing

Gaps that may occur around your window can cause heat to leak out during winter. This can increase your energy bill. Look for cracked or broken panes to avoid this unfortunate situation. Also check the rubber window seals. Over the time, these seals, which hold the glass into the frame, may deteriorate and may cause air and water leaks. Replace them as soon as possible to seal your windows as well as keep the glass in place.

Secured Windows

The most common entry point in burglary are broken windows. If latches and locks of your windows are broken, replaced them with newer or upgraded set of locks to keep your house secured.

Re-painting

For frames, whether its wood or metal, re-painting will help protect the material and will keep its appearance. This should be carefully done in order to prevent the window from getting stuck in case the paint splattered over the moving parts.

Facts and Trivia About Doors and Windows

Have you ever been curious about why our windows and doors look and designed that way? Find out the reasons why.

Fact no. 1: The revolving doors that we know today were invented as a response against chivalry. Because Theophilus van Kannel, the inventor of revolving door, finds it uncomfortable and stressful to open doors for other people especially for women, he decided to invent a door in which he does not need to open it for others.

Fact no. 2: The way front doors open have purpose. For example, most residential front doors open inwards while public front doors open outwards. Inward door openings of residential homes will keep people standing outside the door from getting hit. On the other hand, public spaces have outward door openings especially emergency exits for security purposes. This is to allow an easy escape in case of emergencies.

Fact no. 3: The first revolving door, invented by Thomas van Kannel, is made of wood unlike today which is made of aluminum and steel. This wooden revolving door was first installed in a restaurant in New York City’s Time Square called Rector’s.

Trivia no. 1: Most houses in Ireland are painted in various colors because of their rebellion when Queen Victoria died.  People in Ireland have been ordered to paint their doors black as a sign of mourning when the queen died.  However, the Irish rebelled and instead, used bright colors for their doors. Now, as a joke, people say that the reason behind those colorful doors is to let the drunk husbands easily find their way home.

Trivia no. 2: Most churches, particularly in Philadelphia, have red doors because the color red symbolizes the sacrificial blood of Christ. Moreover, it is also a reminder of Passover and a sign of the Holy Spirit and a place of sanctuary, refuge, and safety.

Trivia no. 3: While excavating on a site in Zurich, Archaeologists discovered the Europe’s oldest door in Switzerland. Based on the tree rings of the door’s wood, the door is estimated to be 1,500 years old, according to National Geographic.

There are good reasons why things are the way they are. Even doors are designed and look that way because they serve some purpose. Whatever purpose you may have, know that Guardian Hurricane Protection will be there to give you the purpose you need for your doors as well as windows.

Which Window Type Suits Your Needs

Know which window type you need for your home. Your window will have a great impact on your home. Depending on the climate in your area or the functionality you need, it is important to determine which type of window can give you what you are looking for.

Window Type no. 1: For superior ventilation, choose double hung window. You can simply open the top or bottom sashes or both to allow cool fresh air while letting the warm indoor air expelled. This can help improve the air quality of your home and at the same time, keep it naturally cool.

Window Type no. 2: For a more energy efficient window than the double hung, choose single hung window. Having only one sash, less heat can escape from the room. This is suitable in cool areas since having one sash limits the ventilation inside the room.

Window Type no. 3: For natural lighting and unobstructed view of outdoors, choose a picture window. Its open design makes it ideal for keeping a room well lit by allowing natural light. Depending on the size of the window you want, you can appreciate the outdoor beauty as much as you want.

Window Type no. 4: For a fully open window, choose casement window. If you want to catch some fresh breeze while in your home, casement window can be fully opened making it perfect for the job. It also allows sunlight and less obstructed outdoor view.

Window Type no. 5: For easy to open and low maintenance window, choose horizontal rollers. Horizontal rolling windows works like a sliding door. Typically, one sash slides open while the other remains stationary. This type of window has different styles. You can choose to have double or triple sliders for greater versatility. Unlike other windows, it can be easily open by merely pushing it with your finger. In addition, since it has fewer moving parts, it offers low maintenance compared to other types. Some design can even be tilted for an effortless cleaning.
