hardware store. You would like to avoid oily lubricants, dirt and salt build app faster with

this type of lubricant. Lubricate the thumbscrews twice a year to ensure that you can

remove the locking pins of your accordion shutter.

3. Wash Shutters

It is necessary to keep your shutters clean and looking at its best. Use warm water, soap

and a soft brush to clean it at least twice in a year. Avoid using abrasive cleaners, pads

or hard brushes that could cause damage to your shutters. Clean your shutter in open

4. Operate Shutters at Least Once a Month

Types of Window Glass

Guardian Hurricane Protection offers an extensive variety of window glass with

functionality and styles to compliment every individual need.

Choosing the right type of window glass decreases energy bills, maintains comfortable

indoor temperatures, provides peace of mind during storms and protects properties.

Annealed Glass

  • Popularly known as standard glass or plate glass.

  • Breaks into large shards if impacted.

  • Building codes may restrict the use of annealed glass if there is a risk of breakage.

  • Easy to transform into a variety of shapes and styles.

  • Typically cost-efficient.

Heat-Strengthened Glass

Heat-strengthened glass is annealed glass that has been heated to reach its softening

point. After reaching approximately 1300°F, heat-strengthened glass is force cooled to

create surface compression.

  • Roughly twice as strong as annealed glass or untreated glass.

  • Ideal for areas with low wind conditions or possibilities of rapid temperature changes.

  • Less likely to create a distorted view.

Tempered Glass

Like Heat-Strengthened Glass, Tempered Glass is heated to reach its softening point but

it is cooled more rapidly to create higher surface compression. Tempered glass is

approximately four to five times stronger than annealed glass.

  • Ideal for residential and commercial applications that receive substantial daily
    wear and tear.

  • Increased scratch-resistance.

  • Tempered glass can stand up to strong winds, hurricanes, and other weather

    events.

  • When safety is a concern, tempered glass reduces the risk of injury due to its
nature of breaking into smaller pieces instead of larger sharp, jagged shards.

Insulating Glass

Insulating glass is composed of two panes of glass separated by air or gas to reduce heat

transfer. A unique silicone glazing process prevents insulating glass from breaking away

from the frame.

  • Reduces outside noise.

  • Provides a barrier to water and moisture while decreasing condensation.

  • Lowers energy bills and maintains temperatures inside a home.

Laminated Glass & Laminated Insulating Glass

Like insulating glass, laminated glass uses a special silicone glazing process that prevents

it from breaking away from the frame. Laminated glass is composed of two pieces of

bonded glass, essentially “sandwiched” together with a clear interlayer for impact

resistance and one pane for added insulation.

  • Both types can protect against UV rays, which fade furniture and carpets.

  • Both types are suitable for specific hurricane zones requiring safety glazing for the

    exterior.

  • Due to its durability, laminated glass is harder to break and offers additional
    protection.

A Complete Guide to Impact Windows in Southwest Florida

What is the Importance of High-Quality Impact Windows?

In Florida, impact windows are essential to protect family and property against severe

weather storms and hurricanes. Installing impact windows is a simple and cost-effective

solution offering several benefits.

  • Convenience

  • Energy Efficiency Improvement

  • Financial Gains

  • Future Repair Cost Decrease

  • Outdoor Noise Reduction

  • Security

  • Storm Protection

  • UV Ray Protection

Is Self-Installation Required for Impact Windows?

Replacing wood, vinyl, or metal windows requires skill and training. From accurate window

measurements to lifting materials, generally window installation is a two-person job. Though

Do-It-Yourself installation is possible, hiring professionals is recommended.

Are Impact Windows Worth It?

Installing impact windows is a worthy investment that makes life safer and easier. Most

people take time to prepare their homes before a storm arrives. Impact windows only

require a one-time installation for year-round protection.

Do Impact Windows Save Money On Homeowner's Insurance?

Impact windows save money on homeowner's insurance. As stated on Florida Statute

627.0629(1), it is a requirement for insurance companies to offer credits, or other rate

differentials for construction techniques that reduce damage and loss in windstorms.

Can Impact Windows Withstand Category 5 Hurricanes?

Impact windows are designed to withstand harsh weather conditions particularly hurricanes.

They are scientifically tested and proven with storm simulations to ensure strength and

high-quality performance under different hurricane categories. However, it is important to

remember that impact-resistant windows are impact-resistant, but not impact-proof.
